  • In the last year, Apple has significantly ramped up its movie offerings with a string of high-budget, big-name films receiving wide theatrical releases and long exclusivity windows before hitting Apple TV+. While the earlier days of Apple-funded movies focused on smaller-budget indie films, like the Oscar-winning CODA, over the past half a year or so, Apple has turbocharged its offerings. The company recently debuted massive projects like Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon, Ridley Scott’s Napoleon, and most recently, Matthew Vaughn’s Argylle. All three films came not only with prestigious directors behind them, but also massive financial backing to the tune of hundreds of millions of dollars. • While the new iPad Pro with M4 is a major step forward across the board, there a couple gotchas to be aware of. Firstly, with this generation, Apple has removed the ultra-wide camera from the rear camera module altogether. • Tomorrow at the ‘Let loose’ event, Apple is expected to debut next-generation iPad Pro and iPad Air models alongside some brand new iPad accessories. The iPad Pro seems set to be the focal point, with a brand new OLED display, thinner body, and very possibly the launch of Apple’s M4 chip. New versions of the Magic Keyboard and Apple Pencil are also expected, both of which will likely be exclusive to the iPad Pro. Evidence found on Apple’s Japanese site suggests the new Pencil may be dubbed the Apple Pencil Pro. Which got me thinking: adding the Pro name to the Magic Keyboard makes a lot of sense too, especially since only the new iPad Pro will support it. Here’s why it may be just the right time for a Magic Keyboard Pro and Apple Pencil Pro. more…

  • Last week at the White House Correspondents Dinner, SNL’s Colin Jost joked about how The New York Times—the country’s most successful news publication—was only kept alive by Wordle and other puzzle games. The Times didn’t appreciate the remark. Apple has clearly been paying attention to the Times’ success, though, as its latest strategy for boosting Apple News+ subscribers is a heaping dose of puzzle games. After launching crosswords last fall, another News+ game is on its way with iOS 17.5’s impending release: Quartiles. Also noteworthy: both crosswords and Quartiles will be equipped with Game Center support in iOS 17.5. • When Apple first entered the TV streaming market, it came with a unique approach. It wasn’t focused on creating the most content, famously launching Apple TV+ with only a handful of shows. Similarly, its aspirations never seemed to be growing into the largest streamer. Despite mainstream hits like Ted Lasso, the service is still relatively niche. All of that was okay, because Apple’s focus was on one thing: quality. Making the best of the best. Some have called TV+ the new HBO. At one point, I would have agreed. Apple remarkably won a Best Picture Oscar for CODA, a prize Netflix has still never won. Ted Lasso scored back-to-back Emmys for Outstanding Comedy Series. Sure, there were stumbles too (Amazing Stories, anyone?), but overall the service’s first few years brought critical acclaim and built a strong reputation, More recently, however, the service’s focus on quality seems to have lost ground. more…

  • The first Apple event of 2024 is almost here. Set for May 7, the “Let loose” event is expected to focus entirely on the iPad.
